Get ready for an explosive addition to the already star-studded Dominican Republic team at the World Baseball Classic! The announcement that Mets slugger Juan Soto will be rejoining the Dominican squad has baseball fans buzzing.
The Dominican Republic's roster for this year's Classic is a who's who of Major League talent. But on Sunday, the team added an extra layer of excitement with the confirmation of Soto's participation. With his impressive track record, Soto is a true game-changer.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Soto's 2023 WBC performance was stellar, with a 1.500 OPS and two home runs, his team fell short in the pool play stage. However, his 2025 season with the Mets showcased his true potential. Soto smashed a career-high 43 home runs, stole an incredible 38 bases (more than triple his previous high!), and led the Majors in walks for the fourth time. He also earned his sixth Silver Slugger award and finished third in the National League MVP voting.
Soto will be joining an all-star lineup for the Dominican Republic, including Julio Rodríguez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Ketel Marte. Their first game in Pool D is scheduled for March 6 at 7 p.m. ET against Nicaragua at loanDepot park in Miami. It's a highly anticipated matchup!
In addition to Soto, the Dominican Baseball Federation has also announced the inclusion of two other MLB stars: Athletics starter Luis Severino and Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Both players will be participating in the World Baseball Classic for the first time.
Severino, who signed a three-year, $67 million deal with the Athletics last offseason, had a solid first season with the team, recording a 4.54 ERA over 29 starts. With a lifetime 3.92 ERA across 10 seasons, including consecutive All-Star selections with the Yankees in 2017-18, Severino is a proven talent.
Santana, on the other hand, has found stability with the Pirates after a nomadic start to his career. Since being claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh in 2024, the right-hander has thrived, recording a 2.28 ERA over 109 appearances.
The Dominican Republic's squad is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with. But will they be able to navigate the challenges of the World Baseball Classic and make it to the top? Only time will tell.
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the individual stars, but how they come together as a team. Will the Dominican Republic's star-studded lineup gel and dominate, or will they fall short of expectations?
What do you think? Will the Dominican Republic dominate the World Baseball Classic, or will other teams surprise us? Let us know in the comments!
